A Rare Outing With History

in Calico Rock, Arkansas began with dropping off the garden tiller for some repairs we could not manage.
We decided to dine at the Printing Press Cafe.
The walls along Main are full of interesting murals
depicting history and lore.
History on a menu
Local quotes on the walls
A pleasant place to dine with good food
even the bathrooms were cool!
Some social issues never change
and history repeats itself...again and again.

Sometimes You Get Lucky

and meet wonderful people with stories to tell
and with great cars filled with history.
This was our day.

Like a excited child I oohed and awed.  Then I asked a total stranger if I could photograph his car. He pleasantly acquiesced and began to share tales of his interstate travel and southern engineering repairs along the way.  It contained the original motor. I was too enamored with history in my face to even think to snap a picture.  Hubby knew the questions to ask as we were told it was a 1927 Model T Ford.

The conversation turned to Dad's old Motel T that sits here At The Farm.  Discussion led to parts. We have the frame, the motor and many, many parts of it here and there. I have the man's name and number and the knowledge he loves his car as much as Dad did his. He said this car began as only a frame.

The thought occurred to me that maybe Dad would be proud to have a man who loves this car so much take what is left and give it life again.  I will discuss it with family.

If I have learned nothing else in this life I have learned things unused do not last.  So I'm still thinking. I believe Dad would like the idea of his car living on and loved by a master mechanic and a keeper of stories and history.

I have no idea what to ask for a price.  I'm just thinking Dad would like it to happen.  We will see...

A Drive To White River and Guion

Eleven and a quarter inches of rain fell At The Farm in less than three days.  The valley was roaring. I did not get pictures.  I haven't checked for water damage away from the house.  I do know where the grass was gone, the top soil is too.  We were lucky.  The water falls almost as quickly as it rises.

That water is finding it's way to White River and on down the line to the Mississippi.  It was some serious rain.  Places not far from us had road closings and I'm sure when the water goes down there will  be damage. The good news I've heard of no one in our immediate area hurt by this monster rain.

Today we drove to the Guion Arkansas where Hubby grew up and where we lived for a while as a young married couple.  The waters are receding but are a long way from be normal.

My heart goes out to those down steam as the tributaries add to the volume along the way.
I will let the pictures tell the story.
May all life be safe down stream.

Peppersauce Alley On A Rainy Day

I finally gave in and went to my doctor with my malady.  It is improving. Doc decided it was likely chemical burns in the lungs from my not so safe method of cleaning Dad's shop. Unknown chemicals being swept warrant EXTREME protection. Bottom line:  I'm gonna live through this one.
It was a rainy day.  No complaints there.  It just limited my exploring and I got wet anyway.
The bridge to Peppersauce Alley or East Calico Rock, Arkansas
The bridge I crossed whose creek runs into White River.
an old trestle over the same creek
I parked with plans but the rain changed my plans quickly.

If you would like more details here is the historical link and facts.  Otherwise you will have to wait til I return for better photos.  It was nice to look around even through the rain.

The Rainbow Bridge

was built in 1930 with five arches spanning the White River that flows beside and through Cotter, Arkansas.  An enormous spring rises from the ground past the bridge and adds its beautiful crystal clear water to White River.  A train bridge also spans the river.
It is not the largest spring in Arkansas
but Cotter was once the largest town in North Arkansas.
Cotter is called "Trout Capital of the USA" but even if you are not a fisherman the beauty will take your breath away.  It was a cloudy day but the beauty was visible near and far.
The river splits above the bridge and leaves wonderful islands to be explored and supplies many areas to fish from if you don't  have a boat.
I do get off the farm now and then.

A Rebel, A Country Girl and The Ozarks

We live in the foothills of the Ozarks nestled not far from White River between the base of the Boston Mountains along the Springfield Plateau at the foot of Salem Plateau.  It is a land of beauty, mountains, caves, massive timber, wild game and water.  It is our personal slice of heaven.

Today I tried my camera to bring the Boston Mountains closer from the highest part of our farm.  It was a clear sunny warm day after months of up and down and sideways weather.
My Rebel and I are still getting to know one another.
Together we will improve.
Imagine the history in these mountains.
My ancestors and I are blessed to be part of that history...
on both sides of the river.
