It's Sunny with 80 Per Cent Chance of Rambling

as I type.  The cold front that swept through here Friday and Saturday night dropped the temps to freezing at night but the days have been in the fifties. Today back into the sixties.

My sister, Marcy, plucked and gathered and shared the bounty from her garden.  With a positive outlook she draped the remaining plants with sheets to help them survive.

In our part of the country we don't get cold and stay cold.  There may be another frost tomorrow or it may be a week or two.  We have learned to keep the garden going as long as we can.  We have all kinds of peppers, turnips, tomatoes, and many greens. I even have green tomatoes growing in my worm bed!!!  Check here for the beginning of my worm bed.

The worm bed has progressed nicely and we have night crawlers and red worms handy if we decide to go fishing.  If not, they work the compost and multiply. The hefty volunteer tomato plants are large and healthy. I couldn't be prouder if I had grown them myself.
I have been playing with my blog on these cooler days instead of playing outside.  When the cold comes fast it takes a little adjustment on my part.  Be open with your opinion please and tell me if I need to return my blog to its previous state.

Hopefully I will be more creative another day.

Cold Frame/Worm Bed Progress

Trimmed and weed free...notice that the top is deeper than the bottom.  That is because it was dug completely under ground with the lay of the land then rocked.
These are all around the edging where the old wooden frame has rotted.  I do believe I can reuse these with some miracle worker like WD-40 and frame for doors...if I want.  Don't know yet. Playing it by ear.

Sweet Hubby brings me a scoop full of white sand to mix with the compacted soil in the bottom.  Then for the next layer of farm gold...horse, cow and chicken poop all mixed nicely.  Add some green compost, stir again and add water.  Will check on the "heat" (composting items will raise the temperature) of the mix if not too hot should be able to add worms shortly.

With doors it can double as a cold frame.  Without it can be a composted wormy heaven.
Beginning the dampening and mixing process....
forgetting and leaving the water on!!!!!
Since this is beach front property
tiny neighbors are already moving in.

The Cold Frame...

that's what it was called when it grew early spring plants.  The structure partially underground was covered with hinged glass doors so the sun's warmth could coax the garden plants into early growth.  On warm days the doors were thrown wide for "toughening" the plants.  During nights of frost and ice the doors stayed closed.

The ground was composted and enriched naturally.  The tomatoes and peppers were started on Lincoln's birthday and the potatoes must be in the ground by St. Patrick's Day.  So many rules that worked...sometimes.
This is how it looks now.  That's right another &%*# project I've dreamed up for me to try to accomplish in humid triple digit heat indexes. I feel compelled to right all that has been neglected.  Dad built this Cold Frame and began plants here every spring.  Now it sets minus the frame with only the cold rock walls left.

I  must remove the weeds after trimming overhead limbs and enrich and rework the soil into a nice loose soil.

I think I will grow worms in this...fish bait, earth worms, creepy squiggly worms that people string on fish hooks to catch wonderful tasting fish with...yes, worms!  We have night crawlers and red worms now I just have to build them a cozy nest with rich soil they will enjoy staying in.

We all enjoy fishing and this location for the bait will be handy.

Raising rabbits and worms to sell were part of the money I earned growing up.  Wasn't easy but always sold out. Hopefully I will have a new successful worm village by next spring.
