Andrew's Campsite

Always careful to put out the fire before they leave
this secluded valley on the back side of the New Ground.
I'm sure many football games were replayed, romances discussed and fire side games played while hot dogs and s'mores were being created.  Strange noises heard at night. The sky visible beyond the trees in this, the place Andrew and his friends have camped many times through their years of high school.

As each move on in their own direction, they try to gather here now and then to catch up.  It is what friends do even though the ball game and high school is over.

Some will move on.  Some will be life time friends.  The future bonfire burns in their thoughts.
The wood awaits the next camp out/catch up.

Protecting Your Friends.

At the new pond
the pack was cooling when danger was spotted.
JR screamed, Something's out there!!!
Ki-Anne and JR conferred and decided to send Bonnie...
Nothing bothers her.
JR says, I'll help,
then swims for high ground.
Bonnie has the monster in her jaws.
and saves the day
by delivering the "killer" log for all to inspect.

Okinawa

Iwo Jima, kamikaze, Hiroshima, Nagasaki...all words that fascinated me as a child.  A world I would never see except through Dad's eyes. He rarely told a battle story only the funny ones to me but I overheard conversations when Dad forgot "Little pitchers have big ears."  He only talked with others that had served. I saw the war in his eyes and it haunted me almost as much as it haunted him.

Dad taught me to love Big Band music, told me about "pin up girls" (Dad liked Rita Hayworth) and the pictures his friends carried.  He talked of submarines, ships, planes and amphibious vehicles. He talked of friends and enemies.  Dad talked of Churchill, MacArthur, Roosevelt, Eisenhower and letters from home.  He talked of chocolate, K-rations and how he found a ripe tomato on Okinawa.
Dad talked of islands:  San Clemente, Hawaii, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and others. He spoke of friends, news of their family and how he kept records in his pocket Bible in code.  He spoke of the plants, the heat, how good a lobster tasted over a campfire...all the good that was.

Dad talked of how they were rarely told where they were going or even where they were. Snipers, flame throwers and children with hand grenades were things I overheard.  He served as they asked and as they commanded.  It was what an American did.

Today I honor all who have served.  Those who made it home "okay", those who did not and those still serving. Thank you from the bottom of my heart with my deepest respect.

Fruitless Turns Around

Just like trying again and again to capture a humming bird, life sometimes seems to work against you. Fruitless....or it seems that way.

My oldest sister, Marcy, was a school teacher for the same school for thirty-seven years.  She retired and like me and our other sister moved to the farm to help Mom and Dad in their later years.  She left behind her house.

I'm not sure how long we've all been at the farm because the years have a way of piling up and mixing all together but it's been a while.

Marcy's plans to renovate and sell the house were put on hold with Mom's death, Dad's Alzheimer's and death,  Hubby and then Marcy herself became sick.  With odds and ends of semi-emergencies sprinkled in the mix just to keep us on our toes, time passed  Life has a way of interfering with your plans.

I'm not telling this as a sad tale but only as an introduction to a miraculous day.

I believe her house sat vacant for over five years.  The renovations were not completed.  She still had the power on and paying taxes with nothing showing for it.  Being the busybody sister that I am I became determined to change this for her.

On line I went looking for real estate agents. Checked their specs and contacted a couple.  Marcy got a letter outlining what she needed to do...and there it sat for a couple of months or longer.

Being the bullheaded determined person I am, I finally just said, This day we are going to look at your house and get it listed.

We headed out...in a car.

Do you have the agent's number?  No, the letter's at home.  Okay, we will just pick the first office we see. (I got funny looks),

Stopped to potty and we didn't have a clue where a real estate agent was. Marcy picked up one of those free real estate books to see if there is one close.  A lady walked by and asked Marcy if she was looking for a place.  Marcy said, No, selling.  She and the lady began to talk.  This is the same lady we had been in contact with by mail!  What are the odds of that??

I told Marcy I thought this was a sign and we were going with this agent.  It felt like God had put her in our path.  And the agent was not the only person God would place in our path this day.

We arrived.  Entered.  Remodeling material still there.  Every thing looked okay.

City Marshall showed up.  Visited for a while.  An old friend showed up to visit with Marcy. Then a new neighbor that moved in after Marcy moved out showed up.  The city was having a clean up and a recycle drive to pay for the city's fire works display.  He offered to take anything we were going to discard.  Out washer, dryer, refrigerator, out broken things and trash with an offer to clear the things that pile up around the shed in every one's back yard.  Done, done and done!

A past student of Marcy's stopped by to visit.  Offers to send the local boy scout troop to clean her yard! Good lesson for them on helping neighbors, she said.

Real estate agent is called and arrives.  Marcy does the paperwork.  As soon as the price is known people are on the phone calling neighbors.  One man came to look at the house before the agent ever left.

Sooooooo, we piled what we could in the car from the house with plans to return with a truck to get her last bit of possessions.  The house is almost empty but the shed is full.  I have feelers out (with Marcy's approval) to donate most of Marcy's teaching supplies where they can be used by teachers or the church or some place they will be loved.

Hopefully, soon this will be a past chapter for Marcy she can close with a smile and a happy ending.

The Past Several Days

were rough.  I don't know if it was the holidays or the weather front or my birthday but something had me out of balance.  I won't complain about rain because we've needed it so long.  Weather changes affect my fibromyalgia. I take nothing for that except OTC like Tylenol.  Many family members came and we had a good time so...what was it???

I have no idea but I know what helped it!  My friend, Sandy, sent me the most delicious surprise! Four of the biggest, most delicious, and prettiest caramel apples I've ever seen, four different flavors, too.  The full four did not last for picture taking.  Thank you, Sandy!
Today a package arrived all the way from the United Kingdom from another friend, Lynne. Tea!
I do love good tea.
Thank you, Lynne!
The art work on the box made me happy!
Beautiful...off to have some hot English tea.

Thank you, dear friends, the timing was perfect.

Saturday Centus 143, Six Word Saturday, Tall Tales,

Jenny Matlock with her challenge, any style of writing but must be 100 words exactly!  I did it!!!  Also providing another link to the man who grows plants and animals in North Wales.  Hope you enjoy the tall tale, John.

Time for the Trelawnyd Annual Garden show. John standing with Chris couldn't contain his excitement.  He’d won the Best Flavored Tomato title the past five years.

All the villagers’ tomatoes rested on the correct bench for entry. The judges sliced a tomato from each entry because they were judged not only for beauty but also flavor.

John waiting anxiously with Chris waiting to hear the judges’ opinion. Chris said, “John, you have won every year. Don’t worry so.”

Purple ribbon…John!

When asked his secret of growing delectable tomatoes, he just smiled.

No one would ever know his tomatoes were carnivorous.
For Six Word Saturday at Show Your Face....Doing six words for a picture, not my life.

Refuse round rusting remnant resting ruefully.

Things I Learned During The Holidays...

No matter how little or how much you cook, there will be leftovers...send food home with guests.

Family is family.  Different, strange, or just down right cantankerous, family is family and we love them.

The taste of food is directly related to the amount of calories.  The higher the calories, the better the taste.

Every one hears the call to dinner but few hear the call to wash the dishes.

Children under four will love the box their gift came in far better than the gift.

Clean house after company leaves.   That way you only have to clean it once.

Another Friend, Chinese Food And Bargains...

That was what I found yesterday...it was a good day, when you forget about the part where I went to work.

Had to stop for gas and it's cold.  I see a guy standing by his dump truck in a wife beater tshirt!  I looked closer and waved and smiled.  Curiosity had him...he came to the pump.  Getting out of the car, I gave him a big bear hug...it was Hogie Wolf, a very long time friend of ours I had not seen in a while.  It was a short hello but a welcome hug.

After work, came home to my nephew fixing my lap top to be wireless, I hope.  I have not tested it in my room yet. He stopped in on his way to Maine from Alaska.  I don't think we are straight on that line, he may have gone a tad out of his way!

Andrew and I left to find track shoes and pants for his first dance!!!!  Coach says if he gets up his speed, he and Kyle may be the main running backs on the eighth and ninth grade team next year...which is an honor for an eighth grader.  Hope the new speedy shoes will help with football and dancing.  Hit some good sales and left with twice as much for half the price...that is always good.

Next stop, Chinese!!!  I can eat my weight in good Chinese food. Brought a carry-out home for Hubby, his favorite...he calls it cat on a stick.

It was late when we got home but we had a nice time, listening to loud music and me, singing loud enough and bad enough for Andrew to beg me to stop.

I needed this kind of day...it was good!!!
