a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

Good Fences In The Country

On a back road
there's no telling what you might see.
This time of year
there's always hay
farms
and water, if you're lucky.
Yep, all kinds of fences.

One Of Those Days

of paying bills, doctor's visits and more typical August weather.  Not much to make you smile.
Mother Nature knew I needed to smile and sent me four reasons right to my front door.
I had a mission but looked out the door and forgot it completely, rushed in and put the big honking lens on my camera.  I'm tiptoeing as if the deer can hear me from inside.  It was so the dogs would not know what I was seeing.

Last year's baby with velvet spike horns was grazing in the valley.  I'm hoping the glass door is clean enough to see out.  I'm being quiet so the dogs won't come running.
It was lunch time.
A beautiful sight to see.
Something put them on alert.
Mom sees something.  I am telling the dogs to stay, shush but the deer have seen or heard one of us.
Don't run!  I know this lady.
She's okay.
The dogs won't bother us.
Let's stay and eat a while.
This was the perfect gift for a hot summer evening.

Random Five Friday...

with Nancy at A Rural Journal gives up a chance to post random thoughts about anything.
 1.  The cattle don't care what I wear when I'm bringing feed.  Not a word was said about my pink boots, my red leg warmers or my triple layers of bulky clothes.  They were simply glad to see me.

We could take a lesson from them.
2.  The deer are more cautious.  Between snow melts they search for food but they seem to be faring well.
3.  Life goes on around us despite the fickle weather.  We help with what we can.  A new calf greets her first sunrise.
4.  Grateful to see a Turkey Vulture instead of the aggressive New World Vultures that sometimes attack animals rather than cleaning up the dead.
5.  We are weary of winter and eagerly awake spring.

A Walk

A WALK
Are you sure you want to follow?
The water's cold and the rocks are hard
Are you sure you want to follow?
We will be leaving the safety of the yard

Are you sure you want to follow?
Lil's eyes said to me
Are you sure you want to follow?
Who knows what waits beneath the trees

I was sure to follow
Over ever hill and rock
I was sure to follow
Even through the gates that lock

I was sure to follow
Down the deep creek bed
I was sure to follow
Trusting I felt no dread.
We saw birds and cattle
We saw deer in a row
We saw our breath in the air
We decided it was time to go.

Animal Tails

Raccoon
white tail deer
and the unknown.
Roux-Ga-Roux, Wolf, Mountain Lion or chupacabra?
Your guess would be interesting to know.

Arkansas White Tail Deer

Watching me as I drive by.
Not sure to run or watch
Can you guess why they are called White Tails?
