a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

A Crisp Wind Blows...

through the valley today raining leaves sideways. The trees rustle as if to say, "No, it's not time!" Another season begins.
The "falling back" of the clock has timed itself well. Food is falling. We gather walnuts, pecans, hickory nuts, pears, chestnuts, persimmons, and pawpaws. Preparing them for storage and use like the generations before us.
The figs frozen by the cold nights display the color of their last hurrah and drift to the ground.    Green still fills the valley as the hillsides are in constant color change.  Once again the valley shall shelter and feed the fifth generation of our family as they have fed the inhabitants that have gone before.
I believe the valley smiles.
We are home.

A Chill Is In The Air...

although the sun shines and the valley is turning green.

Looking out the window I see the grass could use some mowing but Tractor Man is also Lawnmower Man. I have no skill with small engine repair so the grass grows.  I do not mention it.  I think if I had my horses this would not be a problem.  They would trim the lawn in no time and not wander off like cattle do when they have no fence.

I stand by the fireplace and pull my shirt away so the rising warmth will reach my bare skin.  Warming the core of me while I wonder what comes next.

Two thousandth post today and it seems empty for such a large milestone.

AT The Farm

It is a farm,
even though I rattle about other things...a lot.
We do have cattle and we are in calving time.
The babies are a beauty to behold.
Yellow cow is my favorite.
These are huge cattle but gentle.
The boys are tax money or steaks,
the girls increase the herd.
Our big man, Collateral, watches over all.
And the best part of all,
the grass is beginning to green.
A mild winter, a productive herd, and green grass,
all things a farmer likes to talk about.

Happy Arkansas Cows...

rest in the shade with full bellies,
stare at people with cameras,
chase little dogs,
and dine with butterflies.

Touring Is Part Of The Job

This is the New Ground.  It was the New Ground forty years ago when Dad first cleared it and made pasture.  It will always be the New Ground.  This is the highest point on the farm and you can see forever.
The fertilizer is showing by making more green.

And we tour, counting green grass as if it were gold.
It is gold for the farmer with stock to feed.
We find equipment in odd places, waiting for the next crew.
We have ten foot holes, three feet around, covered.
They will set the single poles and pour in concrete.
The idea is to withstand any natural disaster.
There is also beauty in the woods.
The dogwoods are in full bloom.

My Day

started pretty good.  The white lady jumped out in front of me and I did not have my camera ready.  If you enlarge this, you can see her buddy almost hidden in the leaves.
This was my morning drive.
No clear skies today.  Kinda fit my mood, after being off two days, I was not eager to return to work.
My ride home was just as cloudy but the timing was perfect for the fertilizer.
The clouds still lay on the horizon.
but the valley is turning green.
