a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

Wednesday's View...

After sweeping inches of snow off my car...in December...in Arkansas, I should have obeyed this sign!  No, wait, I work for a company that is short-handed, inhuman and dieing...so that was out of the question.  Thank God, I have a job.

Hubby sat up the night before, watching it snow and knows how I fear the ice, but did he wake and take me to work?  Nope, never crossed his mind, too busy resting in the recliner/bed.  So...as I clean my car windows, I left a nasty message in the snow on his truck.  It melted before he woke up!  I am not ashamed to admit, it felt good to write it, even if no one read it.
I understand those of you from the North Country laugh at my helplessness when it comes to snow and ice but you have to have the experience to be able to conquer it...I have had little.  This is Arkansas...not much snow and ice.

School is in session so I thought, okay, the roads are clear.  Nope, just wishful dreaming.  I'm doing well in my little front wheel drive, with my hands gripped to the steering wheel, still able to take pictures as I drive.  Little did I know those patches of clear road were not clear at all.  I was living in a fantasy...black ice!  I drive a standard so just drove slow, lugged it down on the hills and kept the foot off the brakes.
And here's the road...not bad, says those who live this every winter.  Oh, shit, says I!  This is right after I see TRUCKS in the ditches!!!
There were several wrecks and injuries, many at the intersection where children drive to school.  Even a few seasoned drivers hit the ditch...but I made it.  I think someone else was driving, because I do not have the experience to do this alone.

Give me poison snakes, rabid dogs and wild horses...I can handle all that, but, never, ever, ever ask me to drive on snow or ice.  Thank goodness it was only nine miles.

I have not looked out, no use, I must go, no matter what awaits me.  I heard rumors of frozen fog for this morning.  Thank God for the variety...and hubby sleeps, bless his heart!

Before I retired, I always hated gettin' to school just to be turned around to go back home 'cause the roads are too bad.

It's an eleven mile treacherous drive when it's bad. There were times I just wanted to kiss the ground when I "made it"! Heeehehe!

God bless and have a safe day out the sweetie.

I know your motto!!!

I live in Missouri where we get snow and ice plenty. And I'm the same way. I HATE driving in the stuff, it makes me a nervous nelly.

Although I lived in NY until my early 20's.. and have my share of horror stories about driving in snow and ice, 34 years in coastal SC negated all of that! If it snowed.. which it did... everything shut down.
So. now I'm in Colorado, with white knuckles, sweaty palms and numb hands from gripping the steering wheel too tightly. I feel your angst!
Obviously erring on the side of caution was a good thing!
Take care... would love to have seen the message!

Glad you made it okay. So let's make a deal. It's icy - this city girl will drive ya anywhere - I see a snake, spider, rapid dog - it's all yours baby!

I LOVE that you wrote your husband a nasty note in the the snow. SO FUNNY!

I grew up driving in ice and snow, so driving in the desert--piece of cake. Wrong! Because it hardly ever rains, oil and rubber and stuff build up on the streets, then when it does rain this layer is like black ice. Many a car is wrecked. So I hate driving in the rain. Have to take it nice and easy. Glad you overcame the elements, white knuckles and all.

We moved to Denver when we first married. There was 34 inches of snow on the ground. While we get snow here I hadn't ever driven on it because my Dad wouldn't let me. He would drive me to school, work etc. So the first time I had to drive in Denver.....well let's just say it was a good thing that we lived out in booneville....where the worse thing I could crash into was barbed wire, cuz I was slipping and sliding everywhichway. I still hate to drive in the snow and ice. So sista, I'm with you....dirty words in the snow and all. Oma Linda

Glad you made it safely. I agree with you about driving in snow or ice,I hate it. I've felt like I had to pry my white knucked fingers from the steering wheel many times after I got where I had to be safely.
We dodged the snow and had very little black ice this morning after the wind blew so hard last night it dried the roads before the freezing temps got here.
Blessings

As someone who lives in WI I have to admit to a little amusement as I read this. But we just had our first snow/ice event a couple of weeks ago and the first time we always see people in the ditch who just aren't careful enough.

Texas is like that too. if at all possible, i stay home. :)

I'm sorry you already got hit by winter weather. I hate snow and ice too and I don't even drive a car. It's bad enough to ride my bike on. I'm glad you made it to work safely and I hope you will make it home safely too. I will think about you extra hard. XOX

An upside-down world....here in Iowa the landscape should be snowy, but it is still green.

Driving in black ice scares me like no other. And I'm no good at it!

You made it because God told you to drive sensibly. People end up in the ditch even where they should know how to drive in snow, because they don't drive carefully.

Glad you made it safely, Gail. *hugs* ♥

Gail, I'm right there with ya! I cringe at the thought of driving in snow, on ice, icy fog, etc! The last trip home in the blowing snow, wind, ice a few weeks back just about did me in! I was a mess when I got home! My hubby can't understand my fear of driving in the stuff! Might have something to do with the fact that I was in an accident in really bad icy, snowy conditions when I was a kid! He tells me to grow up and grow a pair...makes me so dang mad at times! Hang in there and know you're not alone with this fear!

VioletSky said...

I would never laugh at you - one must be prepared to drive in these conditions and you would be surprised how many drivers up this way forget all about winter driving when the first snow hits!
I always get snow tires and it makes driving a thousand times safer.

Oh, I don't know, North Country voice piping up...Black ice is terrifying no matter where you live. I hate it myself and I drive a 4 wheel drive SUV.

Stay safe and warm, Gail!

Black Ice is the worst..very scary. I don't blame you..I hate driving in that snowy icy crap too..we usually wait to go out until after the road crews have been out...or stay home. I hope the sun comes out and melts it all for you:)

I've had so much experience driving in snow and ice from working as a nurse for 12 years and having to be there come H*** or high snow! I would rather drive than to have him drive me and fear him leaving me at work too long!! Yes, that used to happen.

I do however have a problem with him staying in the bed and not helping me clean off the vehicles! Or worse yet, leaving before me and not cleaning mine off! Darned men!

Gail, I was born in Chicago. I agree with you about ice and snow. I have always hated it. Now I live in north-central Arkansas.

I'm not too keen on the poison snakes or rabid dogs though.
