Gail, I've always been fascinated by these little critters, watching them skid across the water.

It is amazing that the females have figured out how to deter aggressive males. You go, girl!

We always called them water skippers. There's a new name for you.

Surface tension! It was difficult to explain to the young that 'you sink' and 'they float' without safety gear!

When I lived in SC we had a little fish pond. I love watching the skaters on it... as well as the other water bugs that were part of the pond.

And they show up on any standing water. Fun to watch whether one or hundreds.
