A Repost From Eight Years Ago~More Pictures...Fewer Words

It is...was a beautiful day. Warm, windy, and did I say wonderfully, comfortingly warm!
No snow, no rain, only mud left over from both.
Started at the barn with my four God-Given equine treasures.
(Refer to previous post, My Mistakes, My Glories.)
All not recently groomed with their winter coats.
As you can see the wind is blowing.

I took pictures of Arrow's whorls so I can get them read by some whorl experts (y'all!).
In this picture you can see plainly why he is dubbed Broken Arrow.

Knot was too busy eating to smile for the camera.

Showing Magic's blue eye.
It was a day for muck boots, not these!
It was warm enough that the mud felt quite wonderful pouring through all the holes
while I was trying to keep my balance.

Maggie and Lil anticipating the walk
Then we walked.

One of five ponds we have. This is the New pond, meaning it was built in the last twenty years. We also have the Top Pond, the Highline Pond, the Frog or Hog Pond and the Spring Pond.

Parts of the creek no one sees
Another hidden jewel
Help! I've lost my feet!
The sky darkens!
Watching Lil hunt a varmint.
Enjoyed the day and took many pictures.
and found my feet!

This post was written eight years ago, two months after I entered the blogosphere. Circumstances may have changed but I think I may be about the same.

Happy Holidays!

Valley of the Dogs...

The farm pack playing
From back to front, left to right:
Junior,
Lizzy, Maggie, Squiggie,
Diamond Lil, Ki-Anne and Bonnie.
They have deleted a few predators
and are friendly with the other occupants here.
Good dogs!
Diamond Lil
Lizzy with Bonnie, puppy in training
All love the water except Lizzy
she tip toes through it.
Every farm needs a good team.

Are We Dry??

Sunday I checked out the creek with part of the farm dog team.  Don't know how I got away without the hot peppers but it made for a little calmer exploration.
The elderberries bloom along the creek's edge.
You can tell the creek is low. It is fed by three wet weather springs and two full time springs. I have not seen the creek this low in a very long time.
Tried to capture the water skater
but only his shadow is clear.
Normally I travel up the creek so it remains clear.
This day we traveled down and stirred the silt.
The Borders were having a ball.
Lil tries to catch the water skaters
but never gets one.

There was rain all around us Monday.
We were blessed with one tenth.

Something Said, Take The Camera...

but did I listen?  Nooooooooooo and I regretted it.  The dogs were barking, Ki, Junior and Squiggie were baying, barking, singing a wild dog song.   Knowing my dog's barks I heard, "Danger!"

As I approached the Borders joined the melee. Rarely vocal, the Borders assessed the situation quickly.  With a simple no nonsense motion, Lil stepped in, silently, swiftly removed the snake, ending the canine chorus with one deadly shake.  Ki and Squiggs jumped in for their piece...of the Copperhead.  Within fifteen seconds of my arrival, the poisonous snake lay in pieces so  scattered I couldn't determine the original size.  All that mattered was one less poisonous snake.

During Junior's first poisonous snake encounter he acted safely and cautiously while trying to remove the snake from between the rock and the fence post.  The three from the small team darted in, grabbed and retreated.  Then came Lil, Big Bad Lil, never one to waste a motion, she quickly extracted and executed the snake in one whiplash move.

Ki, foaming at the mouth, from the terrible taste of a poison snake, dropped her piece but gained another during the farm dog dance of success.  The barking had ended.   The words, Good Dogs, were spoken generously.

I returned to the house, proud of my little pack of farm dogs, doing their job well...and still kicking myself for having no camera!

Ten Degrees And Warming

Princess, bleating for breakfast,  made me dress and head to the barn to get a flake of hay.  She seemed rather delighted to see me since Marcy is usually feeding at daylight.  Marcy was staying in a little later this morning.  It was ten degrees when I went out and not sure what our low was except that it was too low for me. When I delivered the hay, Princess did her dance and stayed quiet for a while.

I did take my camera but it was too cold to wander far. I fed the outside dogs, saw Marcy had already prepared the cats a warm treat of fish and their usual food.   I tried to capture the diamonds on the timber but the cold ran me indoors.

The Queen of the farm, Maggie, is royally ignoring Gen's submission.  Look at that look on Maggie, as if it is beneath her to acknowlege Gentry's efforts.

I may miss that Sunday walk today.
