a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

I'm So Proud!

Andrew had a football game last night.  The opponents were a rowdy team, no, not rowdy, just plain darn mean!

I know football is a rough game but I still cringe when I see Andrew, or anyone, go down.  Two of the opponents team took Andrew down, held him down and pulled his helmet off.  Where was the ref??  And what was the purpose of that?

Andrew, being a young man of fifteen, got angry but calmly told the guys, Pulling my helmet off won't change the score.  He walked away with help from a friend.  I am proud of his comment and his ability to walk, even in anger, away from a bad place.

This guy was on Andrew like stink on poop.  I know, that's the game, but this one guy would hit Andrew(illegally) every chance he got.  I was very proud when Andrew was able to return the favor like the gentleman he is.  The mean kid was running, Andrew creamed him, legally.

I don't remember sports being this mean...and some parents support this.  It's a game, guys!!!  I played all kinds of sports when I was young.  I don't remember who won but I remember the fun.

Oh, and if your wondering...our team skunked them...cheaters never win!!!

Way to go team ! I played hockey as a teen and it wasnt anywhere near as harsh as it is now a days and I played fast ball and now they get into fights never had that either in my sports days. Some kids are just mean and out to do damage for what ever reason who knows they should be booted off the teams. I am proud of Andrew and how he handled it a bigger man then the jerk that he delt with. Have a wonderful eve.

Oh I cringe when I sit in the stands when my boys play too. And they aren't even 15 yet!!
I miss games that used to be fun...
Bravo to your boy for walking away!!!

You are absolutely right. It didn't used to be so mean- but it is now. Even on the NFL level as we saw clearly in last week's game where the Saints played mean and dirty against the Panthers. I LOVE football but I HATE dirty football. Good for Andrew! He's a solid young man and you have every right to be proud! I'm proud of him too and I don't even know him!!!

Nice to know there are people out there who still play for the love of the game. I still remember when my boys were younger and signed up for a community ed football class and one of the dads there was SCREAMing at his kids like it was some NFL game. My kids lost interest in playing football after that. They said it wasn't worth it. :(

I really do think football is a meaner game than it used to be when I was in high school. Back then, the guys were just trying to tackle each other. Now it's like they're trying to put each other in the hospital!

At any rate, both my youngest boys played football, and I was a nervous wreck during every game. One them still has a tricky back from it, and the other had to have knee surgery for a torn miniscus. They loved it, though.

I like basketball better...

=)

PS. Seems like your Andrew is pretty well-rounded...good at many things!

Yea Andrew! I got hit by my own team when I decided to play street hockey with the guys in 5 th grade. That lesson taught me that boys do not like girls playing with them. So I left with out broken bones.

Oh what memories that post brings back for me when #1 son was playing high school football. But the other son played basketball and at times it was just as bad or worse than football just without all the gear.
And college basketball was a nightmare for me. I couldn't believe the mean things they were coached to do at that level, but then when a coache's job depends on how many games they win, they teach kids how to be mean. Sports have gotten out of hand and all the fun is being taken out of them. So sad.
Be proud of Andrew he is a strong boy in mind and body.
Blessings

You should be proud of your fine young man. Imagine the home the brats grew up in...I shudder to think.

The kids being taught that winning is what sports is really about are losing out on some fundamental social skills. I only wish it were true that cheaters never win, but when winning is their major goal they find ways to think they win and rewrite their own history. It is a joy to hear about young people who play sports to enjoy the game and are able to learn how to get along in team sports. No wonder you are proud. Rightly so.

I'm glad you can be proud of Andrew. Apparently you have taught him some values. He will do well in the world.

I'm glad Andrew was able to stand up to the football bully in a postive way! Good for him! I'm glad he was able to take the mean guy out with a legal hit! WOOT! The meanness displayed by some youth just blows my mind these days and the parents that support it...I just don't understand how they think it is okay! Makes me MAD! So glad Andrew's team skunked'em and walked away with their heads held high!
