The world was full of pestilence
Only a donkey to be found
But that's no consolation
Must keep southward bound
Hollow breaths soil depleted
Onward they did go
Twenty steps a minute
The going was very slow
Leaning into night
Against a purple sky
Feeble were the hopes
They would get by
Mother Mary was a astronaut*
Father Joseph a working man
They traveled on for glory
Found not in a promised Inn
The mystics watched the journey
And knew from whence they came
Betting on the odds
If good or bad would win this game
Oh, the glory of a stable
The cradle of a King
Christ was born
Oh, how the angels did sing!
In swaddling clothes a mother held
The King of all man kind
"Happy Mother's Day" Joseph said
As the Northern Star did shine
For Magpie Tales who supplied the picture and for Sunday's Whirligig who provided the words and for Poets United who is celebrating Mother's Day.
To all mothers and all people who "mother" I wish you a Happy Mother's Day!

OK...fetch the wood for the pyre...there is a burning at the stake happening here in the town square tonight !:)
the poem is good, i like the 20 steps a minute and the prompt is crazy. i see no connection at all with Mary being an astronaut. nada none nary
Intriguing...
wow..a brilliant job done Gail combining the prompts...the mother figure is so intriguing...
I don't think you need to apologize for any sacrilegious content. Your poem was fine. I'm the one who's going to get lynched, no worries. I very much hope that all of us who participate in the Mag should be able to handle this without running to your town with pitchforks and torches. :-)
Mary was a bright and shining star .... I can see the connection with the astronaut.
This is splendid..
It's always fascinating to see the thoughts these prompts promote.
terrific work- the words were certainly a challenge!
I never thought of Mary that way Gail ~ A unique response ~
Such an imaginative poem! I love to see where each poet goes with the words. Always unique. I also like the photos you have at the top of your blog.
I really thought this was just plain "splendid!"
(Saw that someone else used that splendid word and felt it was a SPLENDID idea for me to use it too!")
Ah, if the story had happened in modern times, Mary MIGHT have been an astronaut. Smiles. An enjoyable and creative take.
No sacrilege here....just a wonderful poem.
Mary could be indeed an astronaut, after they followed the star to their destination :)
I didn't think it was sacrilegious. I thought it light-hearted!
Thank you, Gail. :-)
This is by far the best I heave read so far. The prompt made me uncomfortable but maybe in a day or two, I will come up with something!
Charming, fresh and light. You've met the challenge of the prompts, with a bit of whimsy, clever word smithing and respectfully.
A good combination of the two prompts. I'm sure astronauts are familiar with the mystical.
No sacrilege at all. She could have been an astronaut. And all evidence points to that being a happy mother's day--though not THE Mother's Day. I like the Brechtian twist of the God-like figures watching.
I liked that ... thank you.
I must also comment on your new header pictures - they look good.
All the best Jan
"I was prompted I wrote" no need to apologize you are a writer and a good one. Hug B
Mary looks like an astronaut to me. ha,ha Well done with what you had to work with. In fact, darn excellent.
You rocked this my friend. I love how your intellect sends you on these journeys of putting it all together.
The Grapes Werent all Wrath , now were they !
This certainly wasn't sacrilegious at all. It was indeed a great read. Who knows where our muse will take us!
No apologies necessary. I practically tried to reach through the screen and baptize people with my post. Had to pump the brakes. lol
nice rhythm and imagery.
Oops, this is our Magpie isn't it! Great photo but and you did an incredible job with it!
Absolutely no sacrilege..a beautiful and thoughtful poem...which sounds out the very nature of human condition
A very interesting take on the story.
I'm betting those mystics had a blast!
I thought it was fine.
I wrote one for this, too, but never quite got it posted. We are all babies all the time here.
Fun, but tiring!
