Everything is food for something.
We celebrate when the crops are good in the wild.
The acorns had a spotty yield this year,
some trees had them, some did not.
Deer, squirrels, wild hogs and a variety of animals eat acorns.
In turn something eats them
and so the food/life cycle goes.
I found evidence some squirrels had been enjoying the acorns.
They also enjoyed the walnuts and chestnuts we took to the woods last winter when their food supply was low. We had an abundance. They did not. This week we ate some squirrels. We are grateful the land feeds us in more ways than one. The food chain/life cycle continues.

I don't believe I've ever eaten squirrel...
A odd thing happened, yet not odd at all.
Sometimes I have "a moment" and I've been having one for several weeks.
Those moments take me deep . . .
Not sure where it is I am other than knowing I needed "food and fuel" . . .

our oaks here are putting out 'normal' acorns - nothing major, but definitely sending some. last year they were overflowing! thought we were in for a brutal winter and ended up with almost none.
That is a kind thing to do for them.
I can't even imagine what a squirrel might taste like. But to be honest, it's going on 35 years since I became vegetarian so can't remember what any meat tastes like now.

those are AWESOME photos of the acorns, I can see every tiny detail.. our oak doesn't have them, but the trees at the nursing home have them. all a part of the food chain. our squirrels are vegetarians.. LOL.. they only have avocado to eat, not nuts..

Interesting post. We have ten times more acorns this year, I think, than pecans. The acorns carpet the ground in some places.
I haven't seen quite as many squirrels as usual. It may be squirrel season though. I have seen a lot of people, rather vehicles, parked by forests.

Your acorns are so very different than ours. Even with the drought here this year we have an abundance of nuts. My black walnuts are all over the ground waiting for someone or something to pick them up. Hug B
I made chili with squirrel meat, and it was excellent. Since there are fewer natural predators these days, squirrel population has to be kept down. Love the acorns.
The acorns are beautiful! Kind of fancy. So, does squirrel taste like chicken?
When I was a kid, my mother had a boyfriend who was from Texas. He hunted squirrel and rabbits once. I was five years old, and not sure what to think of it. He gave a bunny tail to me. I carried it in my pocket and worried the fur completely off of it.
One Spring, we cleaned out the cat house under the porch. Chanel, a feral, had burrowed in and wintered there. We found 8 squirrel tales in her house. She was quite the hunter.
Wow! You eat squirrels?! That is interesting. I've heard of it, but never seen squirrels eaten myself. (What do they taste like?) Glad you guys help them, and they feed you.
For years we never had squirrels around our place because Ginger (our dog) considers them a delicacy. She's getting old and slower now though, and two have moved in (and, so far, survived).
these are some beautiful acorns!! i have never eaten squirrel...but the circle of life nourishes all of us!!!

Papa Bear loved this! He tells stories of filling his mother's freezer with squirrels until it reached the point where she had to tell him to go hunt rabbits for a change. They ate well with very little money for groceries. He loves to tease my daughter about the squirrels she fattens up so nicely!
