a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

Random 5 Friday

Random Five Friday at A Rural Journal with Nancy was just the inspiration I needed today.  I may have to call my Ramble Five!
1.  Winter still hangs on in all it's glory.  This is supposed to be part of the south but someone didn't get that message.  We had just five inches of snow this time but add sleet, rain, freezing temps and you are walking on a ice rink.

2.  I'll not tell how I can no longer break through the ice with my boots.  I will not tell that when I come to an incline I sit and slide so I won't fall.  I won't tell how cold my backside is after that slide.

3.  Schools have been closed this time for a week and more weather is coming in soon.

4.  Farmers are loosing calves to the extreme colds.  We lost our last born.  Some farmers have lost five or more.

5.  Watching the dogs slide on ice is a little funny.  I laugh but the dogs don't.

Oh Gail I am so sorry about your calf and others going through this right now. Take care Hug B

Winter is desperately hard on livestock. We had pigs in the farrowing house, and my brothers worked around the clock keeping the heat working.

Gail,

I'm sorry to hear about losing the cute little baby calf. This weather is just so hard on animals and people. Stay warm, don't do too much backside sliding!!!

Dang! Ya'll are really getting the snow...if we were just a couple of hours further north we would be in that same path you are in. I think Mother Nature has been a little tipsy lately. So sorry about the loss of your calf and all the others who are losing stock.

Awww, I am so sorry about your losing a calf. I often wondered about that, when I see such young ones out in snow, windy weather.

Maybe I wouldn't do all that well any more on a farm! Losing a baby calf would make me so upset! Can't you bring Mom and baby into the living room? I know, I know..stupid..but you can't help thinking there has to be a way to keep animals from suffering in such cold. Just so darned sad, Gail!

Yeah, I remember being afraid of falling and sitting down and how cold it was. I've become a terrible, spoiled sissy of a woman. Heating towels at night when it's only in the 40's outside.
Terrible! I'm ashamed!!!

Don't worry about the sit and slide approach...Smart women use it!!! I hate to see the dogs slide, especially now that they are "older" and I am so sorry to hear about the calves...:)JP

I don't suppose you could have taken the mother cow and the calf into the barn? Is she too wild for that? It seems like a tragic loss, but then again, I'm not used to life on an American farm.

Makes me sad to think you have lost some live stock.
Be careful out there . . . no broken bones needed!

We have had some extreme weather changes - one day it is almost 68D and the overnight and all through the next day it is -20, only to start raining and go the extreme again.....yet, environmental & gov't seem to think that is normal??? Your winter that is like our winter and continues to do so is truly unusual for both our climates.
1. Winter is iffy cause one day it is here and the next it isn't.
2. I also cannot break through the ice because its thawing today, but might be frozen solid again tomorrow?? As far as the slippin n sliddin' goes, we wear ice cleats on our boots - great in winter. Below is just one place to buy, not expensive and they last for a while - there are many different styles n prices, if you check them out on internet. If you just type "ice cleats for winter boots" in google, lots of site will come up - perhaps you have already seen these, perhaps not....for I know how cold your backside can get when you slide down the incline :)

3.Kids are getting more time off this year than last because of the iffy weather.....and also the teachers went on strike!
4. We are not on a farm, but I lived on my Aunt's farm every summer up the road a bit - there were loses, but our barns were built to have some heat in them in winter - I'm sorry about your calf, but there will be more, right.
5 You are right - watching the dogs slide on ice is more than a little funny. I laugh too, but Jack gives me that look with her ears straight up in the air - like "it'll be your turn soon". ha,ha
Give Den my best - hope he is feeling better - Hugz to Marcy and the kids. I have told my guitar playing brother about Andrews project and he said only one thing as he is a carver of wood - "Do it slow, love the wood and create that finished product with pride" -Take care Gail :)
p.s. sorry my comment is so long but we are on a "5" roll here, eh.

I remember calving time in this kind of weather. It's rough. Hope you don't lose any more.

I hope things settle down for everyone. It has been a cruel, cold, harsh winter. A nice, long spring would be a blessing.
