I've always loved butterflies. My childhood nickname was Butterfly. My son and I went to the butterfly enclosure at the Denver Botanic Gardens on Friday. I remember when I was 3 years old and saw a dead butterfly on the sidewalk. I wept for it. I'm more stoic about such things now, but I feel sympathy for that little girl who loved butterflies so much and wanted them to live forever.
There is something about butterflies leaving, leaves falling, flowers fading, etc, that makes the onset of fall and winter seem sad, but the good news is that Spring will be here before you know it!
They do look so bedraggled. I worry when I see several caterpillars on a plant and the next day they are gone! Birds? Never seen a chrysalis hanging anywhere.

Me too. I mourn the loss of summer and light. More and more as I get older.
I was thinking today that when you are young, you never think about "not being here." But you do when you get older.
Maybe because we can relate so well. ❤️
I await the cooler temperatures.
Have a blessed week, Gail. ♥

Their time is brief but my is it glorious. Such gentle, beautiful creatures.

Beautiful! I love this! What kind is this one? My favourites are Swallowtails and Skippers.
Me, too. And I've told you before I rarely see them any more, where they used to be all over the place in CA.
