at last!!! Sadly, for Maggie, there was also thunder and lightening. I do not know why she is fearful. We got her as a puppy and nothing has happened to scare her this way. She shakes and wants to be close. This is unusual for the usually fearless Border Collie.
I sat with her on the porch, except when I was taking pictures of her terror, reassuring her and loving her until the thunder passed.
Maggie finally calmed and went to sleep.

She reminds me of the collies we had at the farm. We no longer have any--now only a mob of papillons which I show. I never think a collie looks at home any place other than on the farm.
Some of my "wee ones" now also have this irrational fear of thunder but luckily such storms for us are few and far between--nothing very extreme in Scotland!
Poor Maggie, our old basset does the same-4th of July was terrible for him. Our younger basset gets upset because he is upset, she just cant figure out what the problem is, but she knows something is wrong (silly girl). What a beauty Maggie is, love the long coat. (sad to report we didn't get any of that rain:)
Maggie is a beautiful BC! I have a friend whos BC is afraid of thunder. He is a very smart, dependable dog unless there is a thunderstorm underway and then you can find him hiding under a table, bed, etc......
all of our dogs, all of our life have been afraid of thunder..and I've always wondered why...they are creatures of nature going way back...shouldn't they be used to nature's way? Neverthe less, Sally and Bekka get to come in during thurderstorms and the 4th of July.
My lapdog Dobie was like that too. A rumble of thunder assured him a spot on the bed until the trouble passed. He was a bed hog. Gosh, I miss him.
Hey there!!! I just got caught up on your blog, and am hoping that your infection is healing??? Those can be really scary, and difficult to get rid of....
PS-I LOVE the picture of the snake in the post below. Too cute. :)
I had a border collie years ago, and she was terrified of thunder and lightning, did crazy things whenever it occurred.
We too had rain yesterday, and thunder but no lightening. Felt pretty good for a change. Got the flowers and the garden watered and I didn't have to life a finger. I even relaxed for a while and read a book, with a blanket on my lap. Very cozy!
So sorry for Maggie though. Our old Molly dog used to be terrified as well. Only thing we could do was hold her tightly and speak sweet, reassuring words in her ear. I sure miss the old girl.
My Maggie doesn't like thunder either but it's my younger Border Collie, Geordie, who is a total basket case with booming noises of any kind. He'll hide in the closet if I even flap a tea towel. It must be something primal in dogs to fear those loud noises.
Our usually fearless Aussie Shepherd, Betsy, is the same way.
Sweet Maggie. Storms can be scary. I do enjoy them, though. Such a thrill.
She's so pretty.

I have read many training books and they all say that you should never reassure the dog because its like praising it to be this way. You should let it cope with its fears until it understands (by its own) that nothing bad is going to happen. Trust me, I have trained many dogs from the age of 15 and I know!! :)
