Choosing Cattle For Market

My husband approaches cattle ranching completely different than anyone I have ever known.

He is out choosing which cattle will go to market.  Now, let me mention all our cattle are the same color and sometimes that makes it difficult to tell them apart especially if they have lost their tags. The cows do have names like Bob and Big Teats so he can tell them apart. I guess moving in a herd, it is more difficult to pick out Kim from all the other similarly colored ladies.

Hubby's solution...paint gun balls!  He is out shooting his cattle with bright yellow paint balls so he can cut them out easier come sale day...gotta love him. I am sure his cattle do. Although they didn't seem to mind, just a flinch and they kept on grazing.

So funny ! Why! cause that would be exactly what my hubby would do as a tagging solution lol . Yes back in the day when I was on our farm as a child my father hated and dreded the day the cattle had to go to market ! Even though we knew thats what they were raised for it still bothered all of us ! We also named all of our animals, we had a mix of Herferds and Holstiens ! As well as sheep ! I miss the days on the farm but thatnx to your blog I feel like I am on the farm again !

Paintball. What is that called...creative adaptability?

So the cows think it's just a big ole black fly biting them? Nice.

I think it would be dangerous having a paint gun around me. Every time I'd get aggravated with Jim I'd shoot him. Believe me - being with him 24/7 in 400 sq. feet? He'd be covered in blotches!

LOL, adapt and survive, hubby not the cows. What happens if it rains? :D

I think your husband is a good problem solver!

Very neat idea. I wish I could come up with something as neat as that to tag the local wild but friendly raccoons. They all (mostly) start to look exactly alike at this time of year. ATB!

PS-Did you see my response to your question on my last post about BP??

That is thinking outside of the box. I have not heard of that use for paint ball guns but I have heard of using them to "shoot" neighbors dogs that come onto your property to bother your animals. They can't deny it was their dog if he has paint on him!

Smart system your husband uses and he gets to have some fun at the same time. He 's pretty ingenious. That's why you married him, right?

Very clever! You've got s smart man there.
Remindsme of how goat bucks and male sheep get a paint pocket attached to their belly, so that when they breed it leaves a paint blotch all over the female.
It's funny to see the females goats and sheep covered in paint...and know just what it means......hehehe!
