Those are really gross looking bugs, Gail. Too bad they picked your pumpkins to live under. I'm sorry to see it happen. What kind are they anyway? Are they a Southern variety special to the States?
And you have no clue as to what sort of bug that is? Yikes! OK, a thought. Next year plant something like miniature marigold flowers around the pumpkin patch. Marigolds are a natural bug repellant.
ow a question. I planted some seeds from a chap that grows GIANT pumpkins as a hobby. (Milady's parrots love toasted pumpkin seeds). The seeds developed into about eight very strong, healthy plants with lots of blooms. BUT - all their blooms have been MALE. Not a single female bloom all summer. HELP! (Grin). As far as I know a pumpkin plant is supposed to develop both male and female flowers on the same plant. ATB!
Eep! Lotsa bugs! They ALMOST look like Box Elder bugs...maybe they're in the same family. Have you tried identifying them via WhatBug.net? (At least I think that's the address. Or just google What Bug or What's that Bug.) It's a cool website.

They are bad this year, aren't they? I did just a couple of bucket plantings this year. Just a trial. They're all over the beans. It's crazy!
