The Death Of A Lamp Shade...

Times speeds by and the cold weather has arrived.  I am not finished nor do I see an end in sight.  I think I may just always work at endless jobs and have senseless accidents.

I have often teased Hubby about his inability to navigate the dark house.  I did, in the past, move through the house in the darkness almost as quickly as daylight.  Not so much now.  It has nothing to do with my rearrangement of every piece of furniture in this house.  It has nothing to do with my congestion.  I think my internal GPS has died.

I get up several times during the night when I'm supposed to be sleeping.  I get a drink, hit the bathroom, get some lotion...there's always a valid reason I am up wandering.  Until recently this was no problem, if I wasn't sure where I was I could touch something and know exactly where I was at any location in this house.

Now, I've had to eat my words.  All that teasing of Hubby has come back to bite  haunt me.  I woke and for some reason got turned around and totally destroyed my lamp shade beside my bed.  Only when the shade fell to the floor did I realize I was just beside my bed.

Wally World to the rescue.  I purchased four lampshades since I had destroyed one I thought it was time to replace many.

We are wheeling out through the parking lot, Hubby is helpfully pushing the cart with lamp shades on top.  They fall.  Hubby is slow in reacting and he runs the shopping cart into them.  They hang, they drag before he can stop.  A women witnesses this and asked kindly if they are broken and I reply, one is.  Only another home improvement women would know or even care to enquire.   She stands there with a sympathetic look on her face as Hubby drives on while I carry the lamp shades.

New shades have been installed with the damage to the back side.

A brand spanking new flash light sits on my night table for my nightly trips.

As I get older I find that night lights are my friend. Life is funny isn't it..you start out with night lights and end up with night lights : )

oh my, i thought i was going to hear a Halloween story about a lampshade. think i might have cried at the new ones being run over. i don't move round at night except potty runs which is 5 steps and a clear path, but if i did, our house has just enough light to see in the dark. we have a nightligt in the kitchen and in Bobs bathroom which is just enough to see.

Replacing lamps shades can be a pain especially if you have to find specific sizes. I'm happy you found what you're looking for at Wal-Mart. Ut Oh, hubby's in trouble, lol.....(teasing). It's good you were able to hide the damaged shade. I'm with CQ above, night lights make great friends.

Sorry about the lampshade.... and sorrier about the fate of the new one - I'm glad the damage could be hidden. I have one that gets mangled all of the time. The dogs knock it over (yeah, right!) and the lampshade is the shock absorber. It is a bit off kilter.
I'm glad you got a flashlight - I guess it is another concession we must make to age!

Boy, I know what you mean because the same thing has happened to me. I've lost some of that ability to know where I am sensorily. For example, when I am washing my hair in the shower, sometimes I get turned around in there without realizing it. The other day I bumped my head agains the wall thinking I had a ton of room, when actually I was right up against it.

What's that all about??? And in the dark, I now have to grope around to keep from bumping things.

Annoying.

PS. My offering today is a Halloween story poem if you'd like to take a look before the 31st passes us by:

Hi Gail, I hate the dark and even though I can still navigate my house I don't like to because I'm afraid of falling. At this age I worry about breaking a hip so I try to keep a lamp burning always. Of course, my husband goes behind me and turns them all off every chance he gets to cut the cost. :( blessings, marlene

Gail it will be all right just hope a lampshade doesn't come to your door tonight for Halloween for trick or treating lol ! Have a good day !

My mother-in-law always has little flashlights beside the beds. She claims at some point you won't know where in the hell you are and the light sure does help!

Sorry about the new shades. Even when the men folk try to be helpful...they usually end up doing something wrong...lol!

Gail, try to find one of those "tap" lights...battery operated and you can carry it room to room or leave it en route & just tap it as you pass to light the way. Another thing we like are those flat plug ins...WalMart!...:)JP

Had a chuckle out of this because it could have so been me and my hubs.
WE have stumbled around the room more than once. We have flashlights under both sides of our bed!!!
Too, last time I bought a shade I had to replace several as a new one outshines the old ones.
Have a great Halloweenie evening.

I know how you feel, Gail. I've Gotten completely turned around, and I hardly ever rearrange things. I don't like to, actually.
Hope your Halloween evening is going well. :o)

Good to read you are now prepared with a flashlight. Hope you had a fun Halloween:)

Always keep a small flashlight by your bedside - my Mom always said. I have a few scattered in various spots in the house and bedrooms and keep them in the same place all the time, changing batteries in fall and spring. Sounds like a plan, now that you have the flashlight by the bed. he,he I can see you two stumbling around. Didn't you trip on yer tools a couple of weeks ago. Ooh Gail, you do make me smile.

My, um, ahem, echolocation is failing me, too. I've resorted to night lights.

I think for punishment that your husband should dance with the broken lampshade on his head and you get to take pictures for your blog. That sounds right, doesn't it? Hee-hee!

Thank heavens they make 'toward the wall sides!' in real life!

This made me laugh!

First I laughed and then I felt sad for brand new lampshades crushed on their backsides.
