Live Hard

Live hard
Die free
Don't want doctors probing me
Empty promises they make
There's a reason their staff
Is wrapped with snakes.

When my time comes
And it will
Don't want to leave lots of bills
Or messes made by medical fuss
I just want to go
I'm an ornery cuss

With my departure
I hope my friends see
All the wonder
They've given me
If I leave but one thought
I haven't lived for naught

I like to think
I'll depart with grace
To another realm
Will God say, "Welcome, Gail?
I can't tell but I'd wager
The Devil's on my trail

Spoken plain and simple. The devil at the end really got me.

This one is a song, as I sing the lyrics in my head. Your grandson needs to write the music.

Oh that darn devil, he's always stirring up trouble! I say run fast! Run like the wind Gail!

Great read. I like your unadorned but completely perfect language. Too many "poets" would want to gussy it up and make it all "serious," but trust me, this works. Mosk (my site is called I Hate Poetry because I hate pretentious poetry, which yours ain't.)

Yes! the best legacy we can live behind is a bright, loud, wonderful thought in the minds of the world that says, She lived!

This is real. Smiled all the way through. This weekend I am traveling to see my uncle, who is dying and very ready to be gone. He is eighty and has lived a good life, hates hospitals so he is very ready for being lifted off.

I don't want them probing me either. When I go I want to be among nature breathing fresh air.
Wonderful poem!

Your poem reminded me that life is too short.. to go and live! Forget about all the petty issues and most importantly to connect with the people we love..!
Good one! :)

I like this one-and need to get this in writing for my kiddos- no hanging on for me...I'd like to be assured of that before the day every happens.

Well done! Very personal, but with a touch of humor too! Hope all is well?

I agree with T. Powell--this needs to be set to music.

Fantastic Gail! I loved it, so true. I had enough poking this weekend when I need stiches!

I think that would be good as a rap song or something. Not that I listen to it.

I liked the hard-boiled persona. and I love the jaundiced new take on the snakes of the Caduceus. :)

I hear this song whenever I wonder if I ever get a Big C diagnosis. Not going to live 2 months longer if my family's finances are bankrupted with fantastical meds.

LilliStJohn said...

Yep, live hard die free, - at that point, like my Uncle, just sat down to family meal, then to fav chair to read newspaper and "FELL ASLEEP", never to awaken on this earth again. I also agree with Country Girl. H to M :)

I'm sure there's a very special place God has in mind.....a place where there's plenty of rocks, and water to walk through.

I LOVE this whole thing, but especially this:

There's a reason their staff is wrapped with snakes.
