a tale of tails, tenacity, and tedium, as told by me, usually barefoot and bellowing

Do The Words Nut Hatch...

remind you of me?  Nope, not the opening into my house!  I promised no more birds but I took a moment to soak up the sun while reading a good book. Soon the White-Breasted Nuthatch had me under his/her spell.
There it is sneaking down to the feeders.
Not the normal White-Breasted Nuthatch who travels the tree looking for goodies. This smart one was retrieving goodies from the feeders and STASHING the seeds in nooks and crannies of the tree. She/he ain't no dummy!  With seed in bill, it would hammer enthusiastically to fit the seed in place for a later time. Upside down, sideways it worked diligently to store food for another day.
I was never quite quick enough to photograph her action.  She became paranoid about her stash, which I have heard is normal for those who have "stashes" and quickly moved to another tree so I would not know the location of the bounty.
The sun's light warmed my day.  With a good book and my camera I ignored any work. It was a day long over due.

Hello, the nuthatch is one of my favorite birds. They are smart birds to stash and hide their food for later. Great series. Have a happy weekend!

The 6 P's (prior proper planning prevents poor performance)...I told you they were important! He's stashing his food so he can then poop it out...:)JP

If only she realized you will keep that feeder full year-round.

So basically, the whole tree has become a bird feeder.

We've not seen a nuthatch here in quite a while. In fact, I had forgotten about them until seeing your pictures. Nuthatches are fun to watch.

Isn't that always the way it is with birds? They captivate me every time. If it's cold out, I don't notice it until I'm finished taking pictures. Same when it's hot out. I could bird watch all day, every day. Tucker likes it too. :)

I need to get out in the garden and put some bird feeders up. The trouble is we have lots of squirrels and also the Rhodents seem telepathic when I feed the birds!!
Love the story of your little bird :)x

We have had to remove so many trees in the yard that we do not see the nut hatch like we once did. I have seen one at the feeder a few times. I spotted it because it was approaching the seeds upside down.

Sounds just like my day, minus the book. I walked and walked, and then took the olde dog for a short walk. I felt the warmth on my face. My, oh My, what beautiful bird photos. Wish it was warmer here everyday, but am most grateful to get out so much. We really haven't had much winter yet and it worries me that we might get it all in Feb - that would be not so good. I shall take one day at a time and dream lazy warm dreams on the sunny warm days of winter. Hugz to M and hello to all. I have watched my birds and other creatures do same thing. Yesterday two squirrel's were fighting over a stash in the tree in the back yard. The smaller one won the battle :)

How nice you noticed that activity. I love spotting things like that. I hope your sunshine stayed around for awhile.

Such a frugal little bird saving her food. I have never seen a bird do something like that. Saving for a rainy day I guess.

What is wrong with a bird post? I think you do them well.

They are very cute. I don't get to see any of those around here. Have a great weekend, and don't get sunburned out in the ridiculous heat wave. LOL!

I love your birds (and your choice in coffee) and especially your pups, so bring on as many photos and wit as you can! My attitude needs/requires/begs of it! Hehehe!
